How to Choose Your University Major Based on Your BAC Average (2026)

Your BAC results are out, or almost here, and with them comes a decision that shapes your next few years: choosing your university major. In Algeria, this happens online through the Ministry of Higher Education's national digital platform, and your BAC average is only one piece of the puzzle. This guide walks you through how orientation actually works in 2026 and how to make a choice you will not regret. How university orientation actually works in Algeria Your final placement is decided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research through its national digital platform. Four main factors combine: Your BAC stream — experimental sciences, mathematics, technical maths, management and economics, literature and philosophy, or foreign languages. Each stream opens access to different majors. Your average — either your general BAC average, or a weighted average that gives extra weight to the subjects most relevant to the major. Your ranked wishes — the list of majors you order by preference. Capacity and geography — how many seats each program and campus has. In other words, a good average opens doors, but your wishes and how you rank them decide which door you actually walk through. General average vs weighted average Not every major is accessed the same way. Some are open on your general BAC average alone. Others — often the more competitive scientific, technical, language and health-related fields — use a weighted average, which recalculates your score by giving higher coefficients to the subjects that matter most for that field. This means two students with the same general average can rank very differently for the same major, depending on their marks in the key subjects. Practical tip: look at your marks in the highest-coefficient subjects for the majors you want, not just your overall average. The official minimum averages for each major are published every year on the Ministry and university websites, so always check the current year's figures rather than relying on last year's. The most sought-after fields, such as medicine, typically require very high averages that are announced at the time. How to rank your wishes the smart way You will be asked to select and order several majors by preference. Treat the list as a strategy, not a wishlist: Put your true first choice at the top , even if it is competitive — you are only placed there if your average qualifies. Add realistic middle options that match your average comfortably. Include at least one safe choice you would still be happy with, so you are not left with an assignment you dislike. Consider location — studying away from home has a real cost and impact; weigh it honestly. Choose for your interests, not only your average A high average can push you toward a prestigious major that does not actually fit you. Before you lock in your wishes, ask yourself: What subjects do I enjoy studying for hours without getting bored? What kind of work do I picture myself doing? Am I choosing this for me, or to meet someone else's expectations? A major that matches your interests is one you are far more likely to finish and thrive in. Common mistakes to avoid Ranking only one or two majors and leaving the rest to chance. Copying a friend's choices instead of thinking about your own profile. Ignoring the weighted-average rule and assuming your general average is enough. Missing the platform deadline — orientation is time-limited, so note the dates as soon as they are announced.
