How to Rank Your University Wishes Smartly in 2026: The Pyramid Method

Ranking your university wishes is not a list you fill in a hurry — it is the strategic decision that determines where you will study for the next few years. The system automatically assigns you to the highest-ranked wish whose conditions you meet, based on your average and your stream. In other words, the order matters as much as the choice itself. This guide explains the pyramid method: a simple, safe approach that balances your ambition against the reality of your average, so you never lose your seat. Why order matters more than choice When the fiches are processed, the system reads your wishes from first to last and locks you into the first one your average allows in your stream. If you place a hard-to-reach wish at the bottom and an easy one at the top, you may be routed to the easy option and lose what was within reach. Smart ranking ensures your wishes are read from the most ambitious to the safest. The pyramid method: how to spread your wishes Picture your wishes as a three-tier pyramid, each tier with a clear role: The top: ambition wishes Put two or three specialities you truly love, whose minimum averages are close to yours or slightly above. These are calculated bets: if it works, you win your dream; if not, you lose nothing, because the system moves straight to the next wish. The middle: realistic wishes Put four to six specialities that match your average closely according to the minimum-averages table. This is the heart of your fiche and the most likely place you will be assigned. The base: safety wishes Put specialities whose minimum averages are clearly below yours, including the two mandatory local or regional licence wishes. This is the safety net that guarantees you a seat no matter what. Read the minimum averages before you rank Before ranking anything, open the current year's "minimum averages" table for your stream. It shows the lowest average admitted into each speciality last year — the best available benchmark before your year's thresholds are published. Compare your average to each line and place the speciality in the right tier of the pyramid. Do not rely on numbers people pass around; rely only on the official table, and remember that admission thresholds can rise or fall slightly each year with demand. The calendar: watch orientation-esi.dz The process runs on the orientation-esi.dz platform in stages. Per the general 2026 calendar: You fill the fiche de vœux online in the first phase, mid-July, then confirm it in the confirmation window that follows. First-wave results are published toward the end of July. Those not assigned or unsatisfied take part in the second wave in early August, with limited re-ranking. The process closes with final registration via the PROGRES platform. For 2026, the number of wishes was raised to up to 12 choices, including two mandatory local or regional licence wishes. But the exact dates and the number of wishes can change, so always verify your year's calendar on orientation-esi.dz and never trust a date passed by word of mouth. Common mistakes to avoid Ranking specialities by ease of admission rather than by genuine interest — always start with the most ambitious. Filling only one or two wishes — complete every tier to widen your chances. Overlooking the distance and local-registration condition of some specialities.
